HANDICRAFTS & SHOPPING

HANDICRAFTS

Polynesian handicrafts are not only beautifully made, they’re an important part of Tahitian culture and tradition. Polynesian artisans – or mamas – craft hats, baskets and mats from pandanus leaves and coconut palm fronds, showcasing astonishing skill and dexterity.

Pareo or pareu – the sarong – is very important in daily Polynesian life. Worn by both men and women, this large, flowing sarong can be tied in myriad different ways.

Monoï oil is another important item in Polynesian life. It is used during traditional rituals for its medicinal properties and as a beauty treatment for the hair and body. It’s also an effective mosquito repellent.

Tifaifai are attractive hand-sewn bedspreads, bearing mostly botanical patterns, traditionally given as a wedding present.

Black pearls are another unique item to look out for on Bora Bora. You’ll find a great selection of black pearl jewellery for sale at the Hinerava boutique (www.hinerava.com).
